About Me

I was born in Struan Lodge on December 13th. 1943!  My parents who are now deceased, were John and Sarah Gilmour.  My father made the first advertising movie of Dunoon while my Uncle, Charles Black was Provost.  My grandparents were the Johnstones of Dunloskin.  My Uncle, James Johnstone Sr. still resides at Dunloskin.

I live in Nashville, NC with my husband of 23 years, retired Navy Commander Richard L. Moore.  I met and married my husband while he was on active duty and I was a contractor working as an Engineering Aide for Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory at White Sands Missile Range, NM.  Although kids of today take space travel for granted, I witnessed the STS-2 (the second shuttle flown) land in New Mexico - chaser planes brought them right out of the sky in front of me!  You could hear the huge sigh of relief!   At a later date I talked to the shuttle pilots on my head-set while I was working at Range Control Center (RCC) as they were flying over our area!   I was also working in RCC preparing to test a missile that fateful day when the Space Shuttle exploded shortly after take-off killing everyone on board.  Being the only female in the RCC area at that time, it was utterly incredible to witness every man in that room crying out in shock, bursting in to tears along with me.  It was a shockingly sad moment in history that I will never forget.

Who would have thought that a young woman from Dunoon would end up taking part in such Historic Scientific events as the Space program.  I was a team leader in the first Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program, and when the flight was shown on TV all around the world, my Uncle at 'Dunloskin' wondered if I knew anything about it.   Back then, for Security purposes, I couldn't talk about my work.  Little did he know that just weeks earlier I had sat in a mobile tech truck at 2 a.m. on the top of a mountain in the desert observing the testing of the heat plume coming out of an Aries Rocket before lift-off!   I was also photographed (by the Public Affairs Office of the Army) for publicity purposes, while standing on top of the Gantry at the top of the Aries Rocket, showing the payload that JHU/APL had developed for one of the PODS.  The design Engineer and the Field Engineer were propping me up while I had to fake a smile as I looked down at the photographer far below!    As the Assistant Test Conductor for a program for the Marines, I wrote the test plan for the first EXDRONE Missile test which later developed in to the Stealth Missile that was used in the Gulf War.   After we retired, on one of our road trips, my husband and I drove to Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico and watched those beautiful black Delta shaped planes make test runs.  It gave me chills to think back and recall testing a smaller version of it just a few years earlier.

That was a LONG time ago -  you probably didn't want this much information but I only gave a little bit!   I live a relatively quiet life now, breeding beautiful AKC purebred Chihuahuas.  My website is:  www.DemetrisDemiChihuahuas.com and if you visit me there you can see the beautiful coun tryside where I live and my canines!
